AUTHOR'S STATEMENT
Why have I written a book called Lead With Love? The simple answer is pain and love.
I’m deeply sensitive to peoples’ pain at the core of my being. When I walk down a street, participate in a meeting, or engage a person, I hear their hearts, their fears, and their emotional pain.
I know the power and presence of Love. It has sustained, protected, and healed me throughout my life. In my deepest moments of despair, life-threatening dangers, and daily interactions, I’ve experience Love’s embrace, guidance, and resulting peace.
Service to others is what motivates me. At an early age, my parents instilled in me a strong ethos of service to others—it’s the rent we pay for being alive. They were my role models. I am a servant leader in everything I do.
Growing up in developing countries around the world and into my young adulthood, I witnessed the impact of crippling poverty, the ravages of diseases, and the horrors of war. I’ve interacted with some of the weakest to the most powerful people in different societies and professions.
I’ve always been a keen observer of how people relate with each other and the results. I’ve observed a wide variety of leaders in multiple professions. For over six decades, I’ve studied a large number of leadership models and practiced several. They all came up short and still do.
I’ve often challenged the complacency, compliance, and complicity of status quo thinking and behavior in organizations that undermine the human spirit, productivity, and potential. I’ve proven, by example, that there is a better way to lead, to engage heart-to-heart.
Like the ancient Greek, Diogenes, I searched for answers to address the pain I’ve felt and observed in too many people. I found my answers—my truth—in the power and presence of Love. It is this Love that enabled me to be a highly successful leader. It is this Love that I share with you.
